These are all locally owned ice cream shops. You can also find chains such as Ben and Jerry’s, Cold Stone Creamery, Marble Slab, Dairy Queen, Baskin Robbins and more in the area if you like these types of ice cream shops.

But today we are shining the spotlight on locally owned shops or small chains that have fantastic ice cream and treats!

For each shop, we’ll tell you what types of treats are on the menu, allergen information for those like us who are dealing with food allergies (we have a dairy free kiddo), where to find it, what we recommend and a link to their website to check out the rest of the menu.

clumpies ice cream exterior

Clumpies Ice Cream Co.

Opened in 1999 by the son of a third generation candy maker, this ice cream shop makes small batches by hand with fresh ingredients. They use fresh milk and cream that they pasteurize themselves. They then add house-made cookies, cakes, jams sauces and more, as well as partner with other local small businesses to bring coffee, whiskey, local fresh fruit and more to their ice cream.

On the Menu: Lots of delicious small-batch ice cream flavors, including a ton of classic flavors as well as seasonal flavors that come and go. They also have gourmet popsicles.

Allergen Options: Many flavors are gluten free and they also have dairy free sorbet and a few flavors of dairy free ice cream.

Locations:

Northshore: 26 Frazier Ave, Chattanooga

Southside: 1401 Market St, Chattanooga

St. Elmo: 3917 St. Elmo Ave, Chattanooga

Also trucks and carts – you can check their food truck schedule on the website

Our Recommendations: Our kiddos who aren’t dairy free really love the Firecracker, which is tutti frutti ice cream with pop rocks! My dairy free kid loves the sorbet and the hubs and I enjoy pistachio and cookie dough. They had dairy free coconut macaroon when we went – it was great!

Bruster’s Real Ice Cream

Bruster’s is a bit more of a chain than the other ice cream shops on this list, but it made the grade just because the ice cream is so good! They make the ice cream and waffle cones right in the store, which not every chain does, making them stand out among the other chain ice cream parlors.

On the Menu: Premium ice cream in a wide variety of flavors, sherbets/ices, sorbets, freezes, sundaes, and also cakes and pies.

Allergen Options: They have dairy free ice cream as well as no sugar added/fat free versions.

Location: 1406 Jenkins Rd, Chattanooga

Our Recommendations: The kids love the dino sundae with a sugar cookie or the dirt sundae with gummy worms. Mom and Dad prefer wedding cake and sea salt caramel.
